A1:Yes, you are required to register for the class you would like to take even if you don’t need any credit. You will receive a certificate when you complete the class.

A2:No. If you have never studied Japanese, you don’t have to take the placement test. Please register for J100 or J101 class.
Q3:I studied Japanese for one year at my own institution, but I have never taken Japanese class at Yokohama National University. I am not sure which class I should take. What should I do?
A3:Please take the placement test.
Q4:I would like to take J200 class. The class is held during the 1st and 2nd periods on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, but I can only attend on Tuesdays and Wednesdays because I need to go to a different class on Fridays. Can I still take the class?
A4:No. For J100 and J200 classes, you are required to attend all the six periods.
Q5:I have completed J200 class at Yokohama National University last semester, and I would like to take J301 class this semester. Do I have to take the placement test?
A5:No, if you have completed a class at our university, and you would like to go onto a class at the next level, you do not have to take the placement test. Please register for J301 class.
Q6:I have completed J301 class last semester. Now I would like to take one of the 500 level classes, instead of 400 level class. Is it allowed?
A6:Please take the placement test. You may take 500 level class, if your Japanese proficiency meets the criteria for a 500 level class.
Q7:I took the placement test and my score indicated that I should now take a 400 level class. I could register for J402, but I would like to take J311 instead, because I am not confident in my kanji skill. Is it allowed?
A7:Yes. For core classes (J100, 200, 301, 402, and 501), it is recommended that you take a class in the appropriate level judged by the placement test, but you may take other skill-training classes (kanji, speaking, listening, writing, and reading) in different levels if you prefer.
